Laptop Keyboard Repair & Replacement

Keyboards take the most wear of any laptop part — crumbs, coffee, the odd popped key. Sometimes a clean or a single key cap fixes it; sometimes the whole keyboard (and on many modern laptops, the top case it's riveted to) needs replacing.

We'll check whether the fault is the keyboard itself, its ribbon cable or a software issue such as a wrong language layout or a stuck accessibility setting.

How we diagnose & repair

  1. 1

    Software check first

Language, layout and Filter Keys settings can make a healthy keyboard misbehave. We rule those out in minutes.

  2. 2

    External keyboard test

If a USB keyboard works normally, the laptop's keyboard or its connection is the problem.

  3. 3

    Repair or replace

Single key mechanisms can sometimes be replaced. If multiple keys fail, a full keyboard is usually better value.

What to expect

  • Many recent laptops have the keyboard riveted into the top case — replacement then involves a larger part.
  • Keyboards affected by liquid may have damage underneath too, so we check the board as well.
  • Regional layouts (US vs UK) can differ slightly; we match your original where available.

Frequently asked questions

Can one key be replaced?

Sometimes. If the key cap and hinge clip are available for your model, a single key can be fixed. Otherwise a full keyboard is needed.

I spilled a drink and now the keys stick — what should I do?

Turn it off, unplug it, and don't power it back on. Liquid can damage the motherboard as well as the keyboard. See our liquid damage page.

Can I just use an external keyboard?

Yes, as a stop-gap. But if the fault is from liquid, the damage underneath can spread, so it's worth checking.
